Tired of people misunderstanding us sales people.
These normal operations folks seem to think that we sales people have it easy – we sit in aircon offices and use the internet all day, we get to eat in hotel restaurants using officer’s check and entertain guests, we get to travel around the world, we have “normal” working hours from 8 – 6, we enjoy high salaries and benefits like laundry.
They don’t see the other side of our hard work – they get off work at 6pm sharp while we have to slog overtime without overtime pay. When they stay after work they get paid by the hour. We stay back to host dinners when all we want is to go home and sleep.
And hosting dinners/ entertaining guests is not all that fun, you have to think about things to talk about, answer tough questions, know how to handle difficult situations when a dinner becomes an interrogation. And seriously, the food we eat is the same, we order Thai food which you eat on a daily basis, just in a nicer setting. What’s with the comparison?
When we travel we are essentially working overtime – day time for sales call and tradeshows, night time for answering work emails. You don’t get time off to enjoy any leisure time because you have to account for every moment your company is paying for.
Laundry is not a benefit, we wear our own clothes to work so essentially I’m just sending in my version of the uniform which you get as well.
And high salaries, what can I say, I studied hard and worked hard for it.
So I can ask you the same question – if only you studied harder, you could be sitting in my chair now, why didn’t you?
Don’t feel sore cos you didn’t make full use of your education to better yourself. Don’t feel unfair cos you didn’t work hard to get to a better position.
So here’s to inspire your kids, tell them to study hard so next time they can also have officer’s check if it means SO MUCH to you.
